A HOMEDEM finale: co-design, dementia, home

Join us in Hasselt (Belgium) on 23–24 April 2026 for the HOMEDEM end-of-project event: two days of keynotes and interactive discussions on dementia, participatory design, and care.

HOMEDEM (“CoDesigning a home with dementia”) is a European research project focused on improving the lives of people with dementia and their caregivers. To mark the project’s conclusion, we’re hosting a series of keynote lectures and interactive sessions exploring design, dementia and care—connecting research insights with real-world challenges and opportunities.

What to expect

Across two days, we’ll dive into themes including nightly agitation, home-making, open-ended play, shared decision-making, policy making, and the unmet needs of people with dementia from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Expect a mix of presentations and interactive discussions designed to spark exchange between researchers, practitioners, and anyone working at the intersection of dementia and design.

Keynote speakers

You’ll hear from four experts bringing complementary perspectives across social care, inclusive design, and quality of life (photo from left to right): Dr. Claire Craig, Dr. Clarissa Giebel, Dr. Sandra Suijkerbuijk, and Prof. Dr. Debby Gerritsen. Their expertise spans inclusive design and palliative care, health inequalities and social care, co-creation and care practice, and wellbeing and long-term care.

Early-career researcher opportunity

Early-career researchers are invited to share their work in one-on-one feedback sessions on Friday with HOMEDEM supervisors and the keynote speakers. If you’re looking for targeted input on your ideas, methods, or next steps, this is a built-in chance to get constructive feedback in a supportive setting.
